I have managed to find my Wookeysworld site after five days of trying. Where are you when I need you Jeanette? Actually it was exactly where she told me it should be. But she told me that it would be a gold star and I could see a white one, anyway five days later I hit this one and there it was. Sorry Jeanette! I have to admit most of my problems are my lack of common sense. But at least I'm a tryer.
The weather when I set off from home was rather dreary so I was looking forward to seeing some sun. The train journey to Preston where I had to change for the airport was fine. I was lucky to get a seat on the Preston train as so many people were getting on. I wondered how on earth, daily travellers manage to keep sane, It was like a cattle train by the time it left the station. More and more people packed onto it as they made for Manchester. As I travelled I was reading a paper and there was talk of upping the price of rail tickets to some insanely high price for constant travellers. Where is it all going to end?
It's a week today since I arrived here and the weather has been a little unpredictable. It has been 70 and sunny which is just just right for me. But we have had some dull days, still around 65 but as I have just watched the news at home. I'm happy, dull I can manage!
The hotel is called the Qawra Palace and it is quite a grand place, food's good, room's good, every one is helpful and the drinks are cheap.
I came here alone, to concentrate on finishing my next Novella. I was going to write 1,000 words a day as I didn't know anyone here to stop me, I thought!
7 days later and having met a lot of sociable people, I have only managed 1,000. I am sitting in the hotel coffee shop writing this as it seems to be the only place I can sit without have too many conversations. People pass me by and just say hello only stopping for a minute. I was here three hours yesterday and an old Maltese lady came over to me and asked me if I was a Maltese member of parliment. When I explained I was British she said well you seem to be well known here as everyone talks to you' What can you say perhaps I have a double!
Oh well, I must say I'm really enjoying the sociable time I'm having. There are some really nice couples and I've made friends with several singles.
My first two friends who I met as we arrived at the hotel were two very nice guys from Manchester. They are leaving tomorrow and I'll be sorry to see them leave. Julienne has even written for me a lovely piece of prose, his friend Guy is quieter but he comes across as a thoroughly nice man. They have both treated me as one of them and we have had a quite few drinks and laughs together even though there is a generation between us. Of course I haven't told them how old I am and at least the lights are low of a night!
The next friend I met as I was walking on the beach, was able to tell me where everything I would need would be. He spends 5 months at the hotel. It gets him away from the British winter, sounds good to me! He seemed quite excited and told me I was lovely, of course I kicked his white stick from under him. He also asked me to have coffee with him, I said I would have until I found out he had a wife and she wasn't being invited, so I declined.
Then I have met and danced with a Maltese friend of a friend, and his friend Joe. I have to say I haven't danced the old dances like the foxtrot, waltz etc for some time, but dancing is like riding a bike you soon pick it up again. My friend's, friend brought me a huge bag of oranges which he grows himself. I Thought, 'well if nothing else they would keep me going!' He spoke Engish but with a strong accent. We sat and talked for a three hours, he is a very intense man. 'I was worn out just listening to him.'
He came again on Saturday night and we went to the dance in the hotel. He told me he had been taking dancing lessons. I have always enjoyed dancing but had to say to him, 'I hadn't danced for several years.' Big mistake. Because every time he made a slight mistake he would say to me, 'never mind you'll soon pick it up.' Then his friend who was a very good dancer asked me to dance, we did a quick step, This friend said you can really dance, when we went back to our seats. Gorge, 'Yes that's how you spell it,' said see you are picking it up. When he was getting a drink his friend told me he was a millionare. I have to tell you, I could understand why he was a bachelour even with all that money.
I'm not a great sun lover now, I have more than enough wrinkles without adding more. When I get up in the morning I look like someone has slept on my face. But I thought I should go home a bit browner, so four mornings this past week I've slapped factor 30 all over my white bits and set myself up on a sunbed. Every time I've been there around ten minutes and then the clouds or rain has arrived. Now when I walk out. I find all these bronzed people look at me with horror, some them even start to pack as I'm setting set up. So for their sakes I guess I'm going to come home as pasty as I went out. today I am really going to write at least 1,000 words so it's time to say goodbye. Please I excuse my spelling as I can't find a spell check on the blog site.
